Anton Chekhov`s The Duel (M)

Based on his novel published in 1891, ``The Duel`` gives pictorial representation to a classic Chekhovian tale and brings a mature understanding to its ageless tale of temperamentally opposed 20-somethings. Laevsky, a moody young aristocrat, and Nadya, his fickle (married) mistress, have retreated from the city for a getaway by the Black Sea. Their mutual cantankerous demeanour catches the disapproving eye of Van Koren, a good-looking zoologist (and avid Darwinian) working nearby. Shot gorgeously, in limpid, deep hues, in Croatia, the film is performed very well by a perfect ensemble of mainly English and Irish actors.
