Immensely trippy. Almost as if a science fiction film was set in Ancient Rome. Very loosely based on Petronius, this astonishing kaleidoscope of satirical & bawdy events traces the perverse escapades of Encolpius as he passes from lover to lover, set against the crumbling corrupt world of the Emperor Nero. Filmed in ravishing widescreen colour, it is by turns fascinating and repellent, & defined Fellini as the foremost radical director of his time.
